Navigating the New I-9 Landscape – Time For Businesses To Review Their Process

Employers across the U.S. are adjusting to recent updates related to the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), specifically those impacting Form I-9 compliance. The I-9 remains a critical tool for verifying employment eligibility—but recent changes mean it’s time for businesses to review their processes.

Key I-9 Updates You Should Know: – New Edition Released: As of January 20, 2025, a new version of the Form I-9 is available on the USCIS website https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central. This edition includes minor statutory language updates and a revised DHS Privacy Notice. | – Old Version Still Valid: The previous version (dated 08/01/23) can continue to be used through

May 31, 2027. | – Remote Verification Options: Employers enrolled in E-Verify may now remotely inspect identity and work authorization documents, easing the burden for remote or hybrid workforces. | – Streamlined Format: The latest form remains simplified to support easier digital use and compliance, including fillable fields and clearer instructions.

Employer To-Dos:  – Confirm you’re using a valid I-9 version; – Train anyone involved in hiring to follow updated processes; | – Enroll in E-Verify if you want to take advantage of remote document verification; | – Conduct regular I-9 audits to correct any errors proactively; | – Keep reverification timelines in check for employees with expiring work authorization.
