Workplace Injury and Illness Reporting: Do You Qualify? ~ Is it Mandatory?

(Article: February 2026)

Many Connecticut employers are familiar with OSHA posters and safety rules, but fewer realize that some businesses are required to electronically submit workplace injury and illness data each year. This requirement doesn’t apply to everyone, but knowing whether it applies to your business is important to avoid unnecessary risk or penalties.

In general, employers with 20 or more employees in certain higher-risk industries such as manufacturing, construction, warehousing, transportation, healthcare, or waste management may be required to submit data. Employers with 100 or more employees in some industries have additional reporting obligations. Businesses with fewer than 10 employees are typically exempt from routine OSHA recordkeeping and electronic submission, unless specifically directed otherwise.

The easiest way to confirm your obligation is through OSHA’s Injury Tracking Application (ITA) website ITA Coverage Application | Occupational Safety and Health Administration. This site walks employers through eligibility questions and clearly explains what data, if any, must be submitted.

If you do qualify, the most commonly required submission is information from OSHA Form 300A, which summarizes work-related injuries and illnesses from the prior calendar year. Even employers who experienced no recordable injuries may still be required to submit a form indicating zero incidents. The annual electronic submission deadline is typically March 2.

In addition to electronic filing, many employers must post Form 300A in a visible workplace location between February 1 and April 30, even if they are not required to submit data electronically.

For Connecticut employers, the takeaway is simple: conduct a quick visit to OSHA’s Injury Tracking website to confirm eligibility and how to file. For support navigating safety compliance, contact the Southington Regional Chamber of Commerce to be connected with an CHUMCAP specialist.
